Reddit will set up a local office in the Philippines after pressure from regulators, according to the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC). The move comes as authorities demand faster coordination with tech platforms.
CICC Executive Director Renato Paraiso confirmed the plan, saying that while the office will take time to establish, company representatives will be available in the meantime. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has stressed that platforms must have a local presence to allow proper oversight. The agency added that setting up an office could be done quickly, within two weeks.
Earlier, CICC gave platforms 24 hours to comply with the requirement or face a ban from operating in the country. The agency has been pushing for accountability as social media platforms face scrutiny over allegations of being used by violent groups to groom Filipino schoolchildren into committing mass shootings.
