OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT’s integration with Siri through Apple Intelligence was dramatically underperforming and failed to gain traction among users. The company’s filings showed that very few people accessed ChatGPT via Apple’s system, confirming weak adoption.
The integration launched in December 2024 and involved multiple steps to opt in. This setup could have discouraged users from trying the feature. OpenAI found that usage was consistently low, aligning with its view that Apple Intelligence itself was not widely used.
The poor performance shows broader issues with Apple Intelligence. Many saw it as underdeveloped compared to rival AI systems like Google’s Gemini. Siri’s limitations may have dragged down ChatGPT’s usefulness, while the extra steps required to enable the feature added friction. Some users may have preferred the standalone ChatGPT app instead of going through Siri.
Apple has since shifted focus to Siri AI, which is positioned as a stronger and more capable system. This move signals a fresh start for Apple’s AI efforts and a chance to rebuild user trust.

For now, if you want to use ChatGPT on your iPhone, the standalone app is the better option. Apple’s new Siri AI could change that, but adoption will depend on how well it performs in real-world use.
