OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says RAM is wasted on your PC, but not for the reason some of you might think. While discussing AI infrastructure, he argued that scarce memory resources are used more efficiently in data centers than in individual computers.
Altman made the remarks during a discussion on the YouTube channel Cheeky Pint. He was responding to the idea that running AI locally on PCs could reduce the need for large data centers. Altman pushed back on that view, saying shared cloud infrastructure remains the more efficient option when memory supplies are limited.
“But from a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer,” Altman said. He added that much of that memory may only be used around 5% of the time.
According to Altman, large pools of memory in data centers can be shared across many users and workloads. In his view, that leads to higher overall usage compared to memory that sits idle in millions of individual devices.
His comments quickly sparked discussion online, with some readers interpreting them as criticism of personal computers. Altman’s argument was focused on AI workloads and resource allocation rather than suggesting that PCs no longer need RAM.
RAM in personal computers, of course, serves many purposes beyond AI, including gaming, content creation, productivity, and everyday multitasking.

Altman’s comments suggest he believes the cloud remains the more efficient path, at least when it comes to managing limited memory resources.
