Sam Altman says OpenAI won’t go public in 2026

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the company will not go public in 2026. He said an IPO would be “ill‑advised” while safety concerns around advanced AI systems are unresolved.

Altman pointed to growing warnings from researchers and lawmakers about the risks of powerful AI models. He said that the company must focus on managing these risks before considering a debut on public markets.

The decision comes after former Anthropic scientists raised alarms about catastrophic risks from unchecked AI development. Altman added that major AI players could soon agree to slow down capability advances to better manage systemic threats.

Anthropic is taking a different approach. According to reports, the company plans to move forward with its own public rollout.

For now, OpenAI will continue to develop its technology privately. A public listing remains off the table until safety issues are addressed and the company is confident that it is ready.
