Huawei P20 Lite Initial Review

The Huawei P20 Lite is the company’s midrange offering that carries the P-series name and design aesthetic, but with lighter specs. Huawei kindly lent us a review unit and we’ve been using it for a week now. And, surprise surprise, so far so good.

Unboxing

The P20 Lite comes with a travel charger, a pair of earphones, and a USB Type-C cable. I am unsure if this is a retail package. And it didn’t come with a case like most Huawei phones.

First Look: Design

The first impression I got when I opened the box was “wow.” The P20 Lite is beautiful. It comes with a sleek and streamlined body with a shiny glass front and back, and a metal frame. The design is very clean and minimalist, with a premium aesthetic.

Like many phones released this year, this one also comes with a notch on the display. It is small, and houses the earpiece, the front camera, and the proximity and ambient light sensors. This also allows the phone to sport a large display on a smaller body, with an 80.5% screen to body ratio.

The P20 Lite’s front is mostly display. On the right side you have the volume rocker and the power button. On the left is the SIM tray and microUSB slot.

The audio jack, USB Type-C port, a mic, and the speaker grill are at the bottom. While the top has another mic.

Camera

The P20 Lite features a a dual 16MP + 2MP rear camera. The larger megapixel sensor has a f/2.2 lens. The secondary sensor helps with creating bokeh, blurring the background. It also lets the user refocus a shot after it was taken.

The front camera uses a 16MP sensor with a f/2.0 lens. It has a pixel size of 1um and a field of view wide angle of 78-degrees.

Internals and Benchmarks

The P20 Lite comes with an octa-core Huawei Kirin 659 processor with a Mali-T830 MP2 graphics unit, and 4GB RAM.

On AnTuTu Benchmark, the handset managed a score of 89,109 points. While on Geekbench, the device got a score of 936 points for the single core, and 3,750 points for the multi core.

Impressions

I like what I am seeing. From what I experienced so far, the Huawei P20 Lite is slowly shaping up to become one of this year’s midrange phones to beat. The handset is impressive, to say the least, and the dual cameras are looking great.

And that’s about it for my initial impressions. I’ll be posting my full review in the coming days.
