realme 10 Pro+ 5G: First look and initial review

realme is scheduled to launch its latest number Pro series on February 14, 2023, unveiling both the realme 10 Pro 5G and realme 10 Pro+ 5G.

Today, we’re going to take a quick look at the realme 10 Pro+ 5G and share our thoughts and first impressions as we build up to a full review.

Without further ado, let’s dive in.

Inside the Box

We get the usual unboxing experience with the realme 10 Pro+ 5G. The packaging is the yellow-colored box we’re all familiar with that has the realme branding and the black bar at the bottom.

First Impressions

The realme 10 Pro+ 5G features a sleek and slim design that is both pleasing to the eye and comfortable to hold. It does have a similar design popularized by Samsung and Huawei, but it still looks fresh and attractive.

Our review unit comes in a surreal color called Hyperspace Gold, which looks like a mix of gradients and streaks of light. For those who want a less flashy hue, the phone is also available in Dark Matter (black) and Nebula Blue.

The realme 10 Pro+ 5G is built around a 6.7-inch full HD AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Some of the screen technologies of the phone include 2160Hz PWM dimming technology, TÜV Rheinland Flicker-Free and Low Blue Light Certification for eye protection, support for HDR10+, a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, up to 1260Hz touch sampling rate, and up to 800 nits of peak brightness.

The display has an impressive 93.65% screen-to-body ratio, thanks to the narrow bezels that surround it. And as for the “chin”, a common expectation on mid-range devices, is surprisingly narrow as well, measuring only 2.33 mm. In fact, it’s almost imperceptibly the same size as the top bezel, giving it an even look that rivals flagship phones. As expected, the OLED display has vibrant colors, which makes for an enjoyable viewing and gaming experience.

The display is protected by a 0.65 mm double-reinforced glass that provides better drop resistance and an improved anti-crack capacity. realme Philippines discouraged drop testing it and I was inclined to follow, but I did accidentally drop it several times on granite flooring as I was taking product photos. So far, I dented one corner, but other than that, it survived without any damage or scratches on the screen.

Under the hood, the realme 10 Pro+ 5G is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 920. Our review unit comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is different from what will be released in the Philippines. The local market will have 8GB+128GB and 12GB+256GB variations. realme Philippines assured us that there is no difference in performance between our review units and the variants that will be available in the country. All variants don’t come with an expansion slot, though.

The smartphone runs on Android 13-based realme UI 4.0 out of the box. At this point, the UI is now mature with a modern layout and easy-to-use layout, card-style Control Center, improved icon design, and several baked-in features such as RAM expansion and heart rate measurement (hidden in the realme Lab segment under Settings), and display enhancements like Video Color Boost and Video HDR Boost.

One more thing in the UI that I was surprised with was that third-party apps were kept to a minimum, which contributed to a more pleasant unboxing and start-up experience.

On the photography side, the realme 10 Pro+ 5G has a triple camera setup at the rear. The primary camera has a 108MP lens, along with 8MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro secondary cameras. Meanwhile, the front camera has a 16MP sensor for selfies and video calls. So far, the image quality looks good.

In the meantime, the battery has a 5000mAh capacity, despite the slim build. It supports 67W fast charging via a USB-C port.

Other specs include stereo speakers (thank God for this one), Hi-Res Audio, 5G connectivity, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.2.
