The government has extended the SIM registration deadline for another 90 days, setting the new deadline on July 25, 2023. The news comes as less than 50 percent of SIMs are registered.
However, after the original April 26 deadline, subscribers will have limited access to services until they finally register their SIMs. Social media, for example, will be unavailable to those who do not register their SIMs.
According to the latest update from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), 82,845,397 SIMs have been registered as of April 23, 2023, or around 49.31 percent of the total 168,977,773 subscribers nationwide.
After DICT met with the nation’s telecommunications companies and other stakeholders about the current status of SIM registration, they finally decided to extend the deadline for another 90 days.
We’re not sure if 90 days are enough, but it should give subscribers more time to secure valid IDs needed for SIM registration.
After the deadline, all unregistered SIM cards will be deactivated. This will render them useless, unable to make voice calls, send text messages, and use other mobile data services. It will also affect all digital services that rely on a SIM card, including e-wallets like GCash and Maya, social media accounts, and banking accounts. Here’s a rundown of what happens if you fail to register your SIM card.
