PH to retire 2G, 3G networks to improve internet speed and access

The goal is to boost 4G/5G access, cut costs, and expand faster, more reliable internet nationwide.

The Philippine government plans to shut down 2G and 3G networks to improve internet speeds and expand access to faster 4G and 5G services.

According to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), only about 15% of mobile users use 2G and 3G. The spectrum currently used by old networks will be reallocated once the Konektadong Pinoy Act is signed into law.

Keeping these outdated systems could slow down digital progress as demand for faster, more reliable internet increases.

The proposed law also aims to streamline regulations by eliminating the requirement for congressional franchises for new internet service providers, which could attract more competition in the telecom sector and help drive down prices.

Smart Communications has already started shutting down its 2G and 3G infrastructure to better align with global trends. Industry forecasts suggest the number of 5G users in the country could grow from 13 million in 2024 to 70 million by 2029.

What do you think of DICT’s move to phase out 2G and 3G networks? Let us know what you think.
