Smart and Globe have reported a significant decrease in blocked scam text messages in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
Smart Communications has blacklisted at least 615,788 mobile numbers linked to spam and smishing scams during the same period. The figure includes fraudulently registered SIM cards purged through Smart’s validation process.
At the same time, Globe blocked a total of 2,740,012 bank-related spam and scam messages from January to June. The company attributed this success to its proactive anti-fraud strategies and collaborations with the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) and major financial institutions.
Both companies invested millions to further enhance their spam and scam SMS detection and blocking capabilities.
Despite the progress, Globe and Smart warn users to remain vigilant against evolving scams. Scammers are increasingly shifting tactics, targeting users through chat applications and fake cell towers that bypass cellular network filters.
