A new vishing scam has emerged, with scammers impersonating officials from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
Globe Telecom has alerted its subscribers to this fraudulent activity, urging them to be cautious of unsolicited calls from individuals claiming to be NTC representatives.
These scammers contact potential victims via phone, claiming their phone numbers are linked to illegal activities. They then attempt to extort money by threatening arrest if the targets do not cooperate.
“Criminals prey on our natural respect for authority, using it as a weapon to deceive and manipulate. This is what we see in this new scam modus, where fraudsters pretend to be NTC officials,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer.
To protect yourself from vishing scams, Globe recommends the following:
- Be wary of unsolicited calls, especially from numbers you don’t recognize.
- Do not give out your personal information or financial details over the phone, even if the caller claims to be from a legitimate organization.
- If you are unsure about the legitimacy of a call, hang up the phone and call the organization directly using a phone number you know is correct.
- Report suspicious calls to the authorities.
Globe is committed to safeguarding its customers from scams. The company collaborates with the NTC and law enforcement agencies to crack down on scammers and bring them to justice. Additionally, Globe actively blocks phone numbers associated with various scams, including vishing.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the NTC and asking for your personal information, refrain from engaging with them. Instead, end the call and report it to the NTC through their website (ntc.gov.ph) or hotline (1682).
