The MRT-3 now supports tap-to-pay and QR-code-based payments for train fares with a cashless system at select station turnstiles. Commuters can use GCash QR codes, Visa and Mastercard EMV cards, and Android phones with NFC to enter the station, eliminating the need to wait in line at ticket booths for ticket purchases.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) clarified that fares remain unchanged. Whether riders pay with digital wallets, cards, or buy single journey tickets, the cost is the same. However, older EMV cards may not work with the new system.
DOTr noted that MRT-3 is the first railway system globally to integrate multiple payment modes into a single device.
The project was developed in collaboration with BSP, DICT, DTI, Landbank, GCash, Visa, and KentKart. Future expansions will introduce similar systems to LRT-1 and LRT-2 in partnership with RCBC.
