DOTr denies shutdown rumors of online marketplaces, targets illegal Beep Card sellers

The agency debunks shutdown rumors, cracks down on illegal Beep card sales.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) clarified that it has no plans to shut down popular online marketplaces such as Shopee, Lazada, Facebook Marketplace, Carousell, and TikTok.

In a statement released on Thursday, the agency stated that a viral video falsely claimed that DOTr would close these platforms. It said that the video is fake and misrepresented its actions and intentions.

“Hindi po ito totoo (this is not real),” the statement said. The agency is only going after unauthorized resellers of Beep cards.

Beep cards are reloadable smart cards used for fare payments in Metro Manila’s train systems and select bus lines. DOTr stated that some individuals have been illegally selling these cards online.

The agency warned that legal action may be taken against those spreading false information. It also urged online platforms to remove listings of illegal Beep card vendors to avoid being held responsible.

DOTr encouraged the public to be careful about what they read online and to report sources of misinformation.
