No more on‑the‑spot driver’s license confiscation: DOTr sets 15‑day window for violations

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has suspended the confiscation of driver’s licenses for motorists caught with traffic violations. Instead of taking licenses on the spot, authorities will now place them under alert status.

Motorists are given 15 working days to settle fines or contest tickets. This replaces the old 15-day calendar day rule, which often confused people when weekends and holidays were counted. If a violation is not resolved within the period, the license will be suspended or revoked.

The new directive is meant to simplify the process and reduce inconvenience for drivers. Removing immediate confiscation allows motorists to continue using their licenses while handling their cases. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has also been tasked to review existing issuances to align with the order.

The change came after vlogger James Deakin criticized inflated charges and the difficulty of settling tickets during holidays, prompting authorities to address the issue.

DOTr clarified that penalties remain in place, and motorists must act within the prescribed period to avoid stricter sanctions. This move is expected to improve compliance and transparency in traffic enforcement while ensuring accountability for erring drivers.

Drivers may also present their electronic driver’s licenses instead of physical cards during apprehensions. Fines can be settled online, making the process more convenient and accessible.
