PLDT, Smart mobilize emergency support as Opong batters provinces

The telco group deployed emergency teams, aid, and free call stations.

PLDT and Smart are on high alert as Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name: Bualoi) moves across the Philippines. The storm has brought heavy rains and strong winds to several provinces.

The telcos said their teams are ready to respond to service disruptions and assist affected communities. They urged residents to follow local safety advisories and prepare for possible outages.

PLDT and Smart have coordinated with local government units and disaster offices in Albay and Southern Leyte. They are also working with the Alagang Kapatid Foundation to deliver aid in Babuyan Islands, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Masbate, and possibly Romblon and Oriental Mindoro.

Emergency Libreng Tawag stations are being set up using PLDT and Smart’s Ligtas Kits. These stations will help residents stay connected during the storm.

The companies reminded users to charge their phones and power banks while power is still available. They emphasized the importance of staying informed and prioritizing safety.

PLDT and Smart said they remain committed to keeping communication lines open and supporting recovery efforts in storm-hit areas.
