WhatsApp is testing a new feature that lets users create usernames. This means you won’t need to share your phone number with others on the platform. The change is designed to enhance privacy and reduce spam.

The feature is now in beta and is expected to launch soon. Users will be able to choose a unique name that shows up on their profile.
WhatsApp has set rules for usernames: they must include at least one letter, avoid website terms like “.com” or “www,” and be different from names in your contact list.
Each username should also be unique. You won’t be able to use a name that someone else already has.
WhatsApp is also testing something called a “username key.” This is an optional code that new contacts must enter before they can message you. It adds another layer of security. Right now, sharing your phone number is the only way to connect. Usernames could change that.

There’s no official release date yet. But since it’s already in beta, the public rollout could happen soon. If you want to try it out, you can join the WhatsApp testing program on the Google Play Store.
