WhatsApp adds usernames to hide phone numbers

WhatsApp is adding usernames, giving users a way to chat without sharing phone numbers. The feature is rolling out worldwide over the next few months, with the option to reserve usernames in account settings.

Usernames can be up to 35 characters. They can be changed or removed anytime. High-profile names will be restricted to prevent impersonation. The feature will not work on WhatsApp Web or Desktop. Creators and businesses can claim consistent usernames across Meta platforms through Accounts Centre.

WhatsApp says usernames improve privacy, especially in group chats. Blocking and reporting tools remain available. Optional username keys will help verify identities, and Meta says it has systems to detect and block abuse.

Privacy experts warn that while usernames hide phone numbers, WhatsApp still collects metadata for ads. End-to-end encryption protects messages, but data like location and age are used for targeting.

The rollout has started and will expand in the coming months. Users can expect the option to appear in profile settings soon.
