Meta to test subscription model for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp

Meta is set to test a subscription model across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The company plans to introduce “premium features” behind paywalls, while keeping the core services free.

Under the new subscriptions, users will have more control and convenience over their accounts. On Instagram, features include unlimited audience lists, the option to see followers who do not follow back, and the ability to view Stories anonymously. WhatsApp and Facebook will also get exclusive tools, though details remain limited.

This move will be a separate service from Meta Verified, which focuses on creators and businesses. Instead, the subscriptions target everyday users who want advanced options beyond the standard experience.

Meta is also experimenting with AI-powered video subscriptions through Vibes, its short-form video tool. A free tier will remain, but paid plans will unlock more monthly video creation opportunities.

The company’s push into subscriptions follows a growing trend in social media. Snapchat+ has already gained millions of paying users, showing that people are willing to spend for extra features. For Meta, subscriptions could provide a new revenue stream beyond advertising, though it could face subscription fatigue.

Meta says it will listen to feedback as the rollout begins in the coming months. Last December, Facebook also tested charging users for shared external links, showing that the company is actively exploring subscription models to boost revenue. Stay tuned for updates.
