Meta rolls out anti-scam features on Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp

Meta is rolling out new anti-scam tools on Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp. The update aims to protect users from fraud and impersonation, which continue to spread on these social platforms.

The company is using AI to detect fake accounts, suspicious links, and impersonation attempts. Facebook now alerts users about risky friend requests, WhatsApp adds warnings for device linking, and Messenger expands scam detection to catch more fraudulent activity.

Scams usually involve fake profiles pretending to be celebrities, brands, or trusted contacts. To fight this, Meta is working with law enforcement agencies in various regions, which has led to account takedowns and arrests tied to scam centers.

In 2025, Meta removed over 159 million scam ads and 10.9 million accounts linked to fraud. The company also plans to tighten advertiser verification, aiming for verified advertisers to account for 90 percent of ad revenue by 2026.

Meta is also running awareness campaigns in Southeast Asia, India, Brazil, and Mexico to educate people on how to spot scams and avoid falling victim to them.

Combining AI, user alerts, advertiser checks, and global partnerships will make Meta’s platforms safer. For Filipinos, who rely heavily on Facebook and Messenger, these tools could help reduce the risk of online scams.

Do you think these tools will be enough to protect users, or should stricter rules be introduced?
