Microsoft debuts MAI-Image-1, its first in-house AI image generator

MAI-Image-1 is Microsoft's first in-house AI image generator.

Microsoft has officially launched MAI-Image-1, its first AI image generator built in-house. The model is now available in Bing Image Creator and Copilot Audio Expressions.

MAI-Image-1 is designed to create realistic images quickly and accurately. It works well with food photos, nature scenes, and lighting effects like reflections and bounce light. Microsoft says it’s faster than larger models, which will help users create and improve images more efficiently.

The model also supports Copilot’s text-to-speech feature by generating artwork to match AI-generated audio. It joins OpenAI’s DALL·E 3 and GPT-4o as one of three image models available on Bing’s platform.

This release follows earlier Microsoft-built models like MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-preview.

Microsoft still offers OpenAI’s GPT-5 and Anthropic’s Claude in Copilot. But MAI-Image-1 is a big step toward its own AI models. Stay tuned for updates.
