OpenAI has rolled out a small change to ChatGPT that fixes one of its most recognizable writing habits. The chatbot often used em dashes that made its writing easier to detect as AI-generated. Requests not to use the punctuation mark were not always followed, until now.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, confirmed the fix in a post on X. He called it a “small-but-happy win” and said that ChatGPT will now respect instructions to not use em dashes. This fix will make AI-generated text harder to spot and give users more control over their style and formatting.
For many writers, the change means fewer doubts about their work. It helps prevent readers from assuming the content was written with AI assistance

This update is part of a broader push by OpenAI to make ChatGPT more personal and flexible. Features like memory and custom GPTs already let people adjust how the chatbot responds to fit their style. Stay tuned for updates.
