OpenAI shuts down Sora AI video generator after six months

OpenAI has shut down its AI video generator Sora, only six months after it launched. The company announced the move on X, thanking users and promising to share more details soon, including how they can save their projects before the app and API are closed.

Sora was introduced in September 2025 as a stand‑alone app. It quickly became popular, reaching the top of Apple’s App Store. The app lets people create short videos using AI, often with surreal results like dogs driving cars or celebrities in unusual settings.

While it was fun for many, Sora also faced criticism for allowing harmful, misleading, and copyrighted content.

Just before the shutdown, OpenAI said it had added stricter rules to block violent, sexual, and self‑harm material. Still, concerns about misuse continued. The closure also followed Disney’s decision to end its partnership with OpenAI, which had allowed Sora users to generate videos with Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars characters.

OpenAI has not shared a full timeline yet, but advised users to back up their creations soon. More updates are expected in the coming weeks.
