ChatGPT Adult Mode coming in early 2026

This mode gives adults more freedom, but raises safety concerns.

OpenAI is set to roll out ChatGPT Adult mode in the first quarter of 2026. The new feature will give adult users more freedom in how they interact with the chatbot, while keeping younger users on a safer version.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, confirmed the timeline in a recent briefing. The company is still testing its age verification system, which estimates a user’s age to separate adults from teens. Accuracy is key here, as OpenAI wants to avoid misidentifying users before the official launch.

Adult mode comes after criticism that ChatGPT’s personality was toned down in earlier updates. The company faced backlash from users who felt the chatbot had lost its “voice,” and it also dealt with serious safety concerns following a lawsuit involving a teenager who used ChatGPT for harmful advice.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, previously promised that adult users would get more freedom, including the option for ChatGPT to generate erotica. He later clarified that the bigger goal is to let adults customize the chatbot’s personality and style over time.

Still, there are concerns. Studies show that adults who form emotional attachments to chatbots may experience higher levels of psychological distress. Experts warn that relying on AI for companionship could affect mental health, especially for those with fewer real-world connections.

OpenAI says adult mode is about choice, but the challenge will be balancing user freedom with safety once the feature goes live in 2026.
