Microsoft is changing how printer drivers are delivered in Windows 11. The company announced that support for publishing new V3 and V4 printer drivers through Windows Update is ending.
However, this does not mean printers will stop working. Existing drivers already available on Windows Update will stay, and current printers will continue to function.
The change will only affect how new drivers are distributed. Going forward, manufacturers will need to provide updated drivers directly to users instead of relying on Microsoft’s update channel.
V3 and V4 drivers are older driver models that have been widely used for years. Ending support for new versions on Windows Update will simplify driver management and minimize confusion. The company is encouraging printer makers to distribute drivers through their own support channels.
For everyday users, the impact is minimal. If you already have a printer installed, it will keep working. If you buy a new printer, you may need to download drivers from the manufacturer’s website instead of waiting for Windows Update to install them automatically.
