Microsoft to modernize Windows 11 legacy apps

Microsoft is finally fixing one of the biggest complaints about Windows 11: the mix of modern and outdated interfaces. The company’s design lead confirmed plans to modernize legacy apps and tools like Control Panel and Device Manager, which still have designs from older versions of Windows.

The update is part of a broader push to make Windows 11 more consistent. While the Settings app has replaced much of the Control Panel, many tools remain visually different. Some even ignore dark mode, breaking the seamless experience users expect.

According to Microsoft’s design team, new tooling based on WinUI 3 will be used to refresh these legacy apps. Early preview builds already show progress, including a redesigned Run dialog.

The goal is not just cosmetic. Streamlining legacy apps will reduce confusion for users switching between old and new interfaces. It also aligns with ongoing improvements to Windows 11, including taskbar tweaks, File Explorer updates, and accessibility enhancements.

There’s no clear timeline for when all legacy apps will be modernized, but Microsoft’s commitment signals a long-term plan. For users, this means a more polished and consistent experience across the operating system.
