Meta’s VR strategy shifts focus to mobile users

Meta is changing how it approaches virtual reality. The company announced that Horizon Worlds, Meta’s social VR platform, will now focus more on mobile users.

VR has grown slower than expected, but Meta still reported steady growth in headset sales and in-app purchases. The bigger gains came from mobile in 2025. Monthly active users on mobile grew four times, and creators built more than 2,000 mobile-only worlds.

To support this shift, Meta introduced Horizon Studio and Horizon Engine. These tools are designed to make mobile worlds run better and handle more users easily.

The company also added new ways for creators to earn, like season passes and featured bundles, along with better app discovery features.

By focusing on mobile, Meta hopes to expand Horizon beyond VR headsets. Mobile becomes the new gateway to their metaverse plans, but what this means to users and the social media platforms remains to be seen. Stay tuned.
