Meta granted patent for AI that could post after death

Meta has secured a new patent for an AI system that could keep posting on social media even after a user stops — or passes away.

Approved in December 2025, the patent describes a large language model trained on a person’s posts, likes, comments, and messages. The AI would then generate new activity that mimics the user’s online behavior.

Meta said it has no plans to develop the tool. Patents do not always lead to products. Still, the filing shows there’s interest in “grief tech,” where AI is used to extend digital identities beyond life.

Aside from posts from beyond the grave, the system could help influencers maintain engagement during breaks or even simulate interactions like video and audio calls. But experts warn of serious risks. Some say such tools could exploit grief while boosting engagement and data collection. Others say that replicas may complicate mourning.

Meta has previously introduced features like Facebook’s “legacy contact,” which lets users manage accounts after death. Other companies are also exploring similar concepts.
