Facebook adds animated profile pictures with Meta AI

Facebook is rolling out a new feature that lets users animate their profile pictures using Meta AI. The update brings simple effects like a wave, heart, confetti, or a party hat to static images.

The feature works best with photos showing a single person facing the camera. Meta says more seasonal and event-based animations will follow, so users can expect different options throughout the year.

Meta AI is also powering Restyle for Stories and Memories, which lets users transform images with prompts or preset styles. Options include anime-inspired looks, glowing effects, and themed backdrops. Text posts are also getting animated backgrounds, with choices like falling leaves or ocean waves.

This is the latest update Facebook has implemented this quarter. Recently, the platform tested new restrictions that could change how people share posts, including charging users for external links.

Meta is also preparing to test a subscription model across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The plan introduces premium features behind paywalls, while keeping core services free.

If rolled out widely, these new features could mark a shift in how people access social media, adding more value to users.
