Meta to shut down Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac

Users must switch to Facebook.com to continue messaging.

Meta is officially retiring its standalone Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac. Starting December 15, users will no longer be able to log in through the apps and will be redirected to Facebook.com to continue using Messenger.

The company confirmed the shutdown and has begun notifying users. Mac users will get a 60-day grace period before the app becomes unusable. Meta recommends deleting the app once it stops working.

Users are encouraged to switch to the web version or, for Windows users, the Facebook desktop app. Meta also advises enabling secure storage and setting a PIN to preserve chat history. Once users move to the web version, their messages will still be accessible across devices.

To check secure storage, users can go to Messenger settings, tap Privacy & Safety, then End-to-End Encrypted Chats, and look under Message Storage.
