Starting this week, Instagram will follow PG-13 content guidelines for all teen accounts. That means users under 18 will see posts similar to what’s allowed in PG-13 movies: Some strong language or suggestive content, but not often.
Teens will be placed in a 13+ setting by default. They can’t turn it off unless a parent gives permission. Parents can also choose a stricter setting. They will also have tools to report posts they think are not okay for teens.
The platform will now hide or avoid recommending posts with strong language, risky stunts, or marijuana-related content. It already blocks sexually suggestive material, graphic images, and posts about alcohol or tobacco.
The update also affects how teens interact with accounts. They won’t be able to follow or message profiles flagged for sharing adult content. These accounts also can’t follow or contact teens.

Search results and recommendations will be filtered more strictly. Even if a teen follows someone, they won’t see posts that break the new rules. Instagram’s AI tools will also follow PG-13 limits when responding to teens.
