Instagram will stop supporting end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messages after May 8, 2026. The update was quietly posted on the Help Center, with no official announcement from Meta.
End-to-end encryption is a security feature that makes sure only the sender and receiver can read a message. Not even Meta could access those chats. Starting May 9, 2026, this protection will be gone. This could mean Meta, and governments that request data, will be able to read Instagram messages.
According to Instagram’s Help Center, users will see notices in affected chats with steps on how to download their messages and media before the change. The page also explains how E2EE works, noting that each device has a unique key to lock and unlock messages.
However, if a user reports or shares a message, Meta can still access it. Features like chat themes are not encrypted.
Meta had previously promoted encryption across Messenger and WhatsApp as part of its push for stronger security. Rolling back on Instagram raises questions about compliance with government requests and Meta’s priorities.
