YouTube is giving its Premium Lite plan a boost with two new features: background play and downloads. The rollout has already started and will reach all countries where Premium Lite is available in the coming weeks.
Premium Lite was debuted as a cheaper way to watch videos without ads. Until now, it only removed ads from regular videos. With this update, subscribers can now keep videos playing while using other apps and save them for offline viewing.
The changes come after feedback from users who wanted more than just ad-free playback but still didn’t want to pay for the full Premium plan. YouTube says this is part of its ongoing effort to test and improve its subscription options.
Even with the upgrade, Premium Lite is still limited compared to the full Premium tier. Music videos and YouTube Music remain ad-supported, and features like higher-quality streaming and exclusive content are only available with full Premium.
With the new features, Premium Lite has become more practical for casual viewers who want convenience at a lower price. It could also attract more users who are not ready to commit to the full package.

In the Philippines, the plan costs ₱109 per month, which is around ₱80 cheaper than the regular Premium plan.
