OpenAI is building a desktop superapp for ChatGPT

OpenAI is working on a new desktop app that brings ChatGPT, Codex, and a web browser together in one place. The company wants to make its tools easier to use without switching between different apps.

Codex, which helps generate code from plain text, was previously released as a standalone desktop app. Merging it with ChatGPT and browsing features will give users a smoother experience while staying competitive against its rivals.

The company explained that the new desktop app is part of its effort to bring all its tools under one roof. Combining ChatGPT, Codex, and browsing features will help streamline their resources and make development more efficient. This approach is meant to deliver updates faster and provide users with a more consistent experience across its products.

Aside from the superapp, OpenAI also plans to show ads to free and “Go” tier ChatGPT users in the US. This marks the first time the company will introduce advertising into its consumer products.

For users, the desktop superapp means fewer apps to install and a more consistent way to access OpenAI’s AI tools. It is part of the company’s broader strategy to consolidate its offerings and improve efficiency.
