Apple announces iOS 27 with support for older iPhones

Apple has announced iOS 27 at WWDC 2026. The update will roll out to all iPhones currently running iOS 26, including the iPhone 11 series. This comes as a surprise, since many expected Apple to drop support for older models.

iOS 27 focuses on speed and usability. Apps will launch 30 percent faster, AirDrop transfers are 80 percent quicker, and a new CPU scheduler will keep older iPhones more responsive.

Moreover, icons will look sharper with layered refraction, and Liquid Glass will add a transparency slider. Spotlight search was also rebuilt with a new index, while Mail will become smarter.

The update, however, creates a split experience. Full Apple Intelligence and the redesigned Siri AI are limited to the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and newer devices.

Older iPhones, including the base iPhone 15, will still get performance improvements like faster app launches, smoother AirDrop, and better iCloud sharing, but not the new Siri features.

In Europe, Siri AI will not launch right away due to regulatory requirements under the Digital Markets Act. Macs, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro users in the EU and UK are unaffected.

Here’s the full list of supported devices:

  • iPhone 17 series: 17 Pro Max, 17 Pro, 17, 17e, and iPhone Air
  • iPhone 16 series: 16 Pro Max, 16 Pro, 16 Plus, 16, 16e
