Visa has rolled out contactless fare payments on LRT-2 starting July 13, in partnership with RCBC and the Department of Transportation (DOTr). The system covers all 13 stations, letting commuters pay with Visa cards, QR codes, or NFC-enabled devices.
The project is Visa’s fourth cashless transit initiative in the Philippines, following earlier rollouts on MRT-3 and bus systems in Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod. It supports more than 160,000 daily riders.

Payments are powered by Visa’s open-loop technology, which allows any Visa card or compatible device to be used directly at station gates. This reduces reliance on stored-value tickets and expands access to digital payments.
Visa says the move supports financial inclusion and digital adoption, while helping modernize Metro Manila’s transport system. The company’s Economic Empowerment Institute estimates the upgrade could increase ridership by up to 10%.
Jeffrey Navarro, Visa’s Country Manager for the Philippines, noted the rollout aligns with government efforts to improve productivity and economic growth through digital mobility solutions. “The automated fare collection systems across Metro Manila’s three rail lines signifies Visa’s commitment toward accelerating financial inclusion, allowing both commuters and tourists to access digital payments while improving overall urban mobility in the Philippines.”
Globally, Visa has more than 870 tap-to-ride transit projects, making the Philippines part of a wider push for smart, sustainable urban infrastructure.
