Bill to create a national agency for AI for the Philippines proposed

The bill seeks to establish an agency tasked at overseeing the Philippines' efforts in the field of AI.

A bill to create an agency for AI has been filed in the House of Representatives. It seeks to establish the Artificial Intelligence Development Authority, or AIDA, tasked to oversee the Philippines’ efforts in the field of AI.

House Bill #7396, or the Artificial Intelligence Development Authority Act, was filed by Surigao del Norte Second District Representative Robert Ace Barbers, and aims to “promote research and development in AI, support the growth of AI-related industries, and enhance the skills of the Filipino workforce in the field of AI.”

It will also regulate the development and deployment of AI technologies in the country, to ensure these are “aligned with the principles of responsible AI development”.

In addition, the bill will provide funding and support for AI research and innovation, as well as encourage collaboration among government agencies, academic institutions, private sector entities, and other AI-related organizations.
