Smart, DOTr partner for EDSA Greenways Project

Smart Communications signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to support the EDSA Greenways Project, a flagship infrastructure initiative of the Build Better More program.

The MOA covers the relocation of Smart’s utilities and cables that will be affected by the construction of elevated walkways along EDSA, the main artery of Metro Manila. The walkways will connect four major MRT and LRT stations: Balintawak, Cubao, Guadalupe, and Taft. The project aims to provide safe, convenient, and accessible mobility options for pedestrians, especially the elderly, persons with disabilities (PWDs), women, and children.

The EDSA Greenways Project is part of the Build Better More program, which seeks to address the infrastructure gap in the country and spur economic growth and development. The program is led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who also chairs the Presidential Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC), a multi-sectoral body that provides inputs and recommendations for the government’s infrastructure agenda.

“We welcome this opportunity to work hand-in-hand with the Government to help boost the country’s economy and improve the quality of life of our countrymen while ensuring that we are able to continue serving our subscribers and keep them connected,” said Alfredo S. Panlilio, PLDT and Smart President and CEO.

The MOA signing was held at the DOTr headquarters in San Juan on September 27, 2023. Present during the event were DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista, Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma, PLDT and Smart Network Head Eric S. Santiago, Smart VP and Head of Regulatory Affairs Atty. Roy Ibay, PLDT Head CRM – Public Sector William Batac, and representatives from other telcos.

“Our goal is to have a smooth relocation of utilities and cables in areas where the project will be constructed. I cannot overemphasize the value of the EDSA Greenways Project in providing sustainable mobility options,” said Bautista.

Santiago added: “With our customers as our North Star, we are always looking for ways to serve them better by enhancing our network, enabling the seamless delivery of our products, services and innovative solutions,”

This partnership between Smart and DOTr is part of the company’s commitment to support the government’s digitalization thrust and narrow the digital divide in the country. It also aligns with PLDT’s multi-year transformation program that focuses on elevating customer experience and delivering industry-leading operational excellence.
