Leica Leitz Phone 3 official with SD8 Gen 2, 1-inch camera sensor

Premium camera maker Leica announces its latest foray into the smartphone world, the Leitz Phone 3. This is the third generation device. The Leitz Phone 1 launched in 2021, while the Leitz Phone 2 was revealed in 2022.

The Leitz Phone 3 has a 6.6-inch Pro IGZO OLED display with a 240Hz refresh rate, a 2730×1260 resolution, and a peak brightness of 2000 nits.

The handset has a single camera at the back with an unorthodox 47.2MP camera with image stabilization, backed by a 1-inch sensor with a 19mm equivalent lens and “Octa Phase Detection Autofocus” which the company says offers fast and precise autofocus. It also has a 12.6MP front-facing camera for selfies.

Under the hood, the Leitz Phone 3 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip with 12GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a microSD expansion slot of up to 1TB capacity. It also has a large 5,000mAh battery that supports wireless charging. There’s no information on how many watts the fast charging uses, but it does say a full charge takes 100 minutes.

The phone also runs on Android 14 with Leica apps and filters. It also offers The Golden Hour widget, a Leitz Phone exclusive widget that tells you sunrise and sunset times; and Leica Perspective Control which corrects the perspective of vertical falling lines such as in buildings and other structures.

The Leitz Phone 3 comes in Leica Black and will be available exclusively in Japan starting April 19, 2024. It comes with a matching case and an aluminum lens cap. Unfortunately, its price is yet to be disclosed.
