MRT-3 to remove X-ray machines for faster entry

The move aims to ease congestion and modernize security.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is phasing out X-ray machines at Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) turnstiles to ease congestion and modernize security. This move aligns with global transit standards and aims to improve passenger flow.

DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said in a press conference on Friday that X-ray removal began in April 2025 at North Avenue and Taft Avenue stations. The program later expanded to Taft Avenue Station (LRT-1) and Recto Station (LRT-2), with authorities closely monitoring results to ensure commuter safety.

Despite eliminating X-ray screenings, the DOTr assures passengers that security remains a top priority. The agency is working with the Office of Transport Security, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to maintain strict safety protocols.

To enhance security, trained K9 units from the PCG K9 Academy have been deployed at MRT-3 stations.

The DOTr is also introducing cashless payments at MRT-3 turnstiles starting in July 2025. Commuters will soon be able to tap debit and credit cards for entry, eliminating the need for Beep cards. Mobile wallets like GCash are already in use, with more options to follow.

Authorities will continue monitoring the impact of X-ray removal while expanding K9 patrols and improving station infrastructure, including better signage at MRT-3 stops for smoother navigation.
