Threads overtakes X in global mobile users for the first time

Threads launched in 2023.

Meta’s Threads has overtaken X (formerly Twitter) in global daily active mobile users, according to new data from Similarweb. On September 20, it recorded 128.7 million daily users, edging past X’s 127.1 million. The platform also leads in worldwide iOS usage, with 62.5 million users compared to X’s 56.6 million.

Threads launched in 2023 as a text-based app linked to Instagram. Its growth has been steady, while X’s user base has declined. A year ago, X had nearly 150 million daily mobile users. Threads had just over 81 million.

However, X still leads in the US with 21.3 million daily users on mobile, while Threads had 16.2 million on September 20.

Advertisers are taking notice. Barclays projects the social media platform could earn $2 billion in ad revenue by 2026 and $9 billion by 2027. Meta opened it to ads globally in April 2025.

X, meanwhile, continues to struggle. Its global ad revenue dropped 51.7% in 2023 and declined further in 2024. Some advertisers returned in 2025, but recovery remains slow.

Threads benefits from its integration with Instagram, which has 3 billion monthly users. This connection helps drive sign-ups and ad targeting.
