Meta announced that Threads will start showing ads worldwide next week. This rollout marks the end of the platform’s ad‑free run and signals its move into Meta’s broader business model.
Ads will appear gradually at first, with Meta saying delivery will start at a low level before scaling up to full availability in the coming months. The system uses the same AI‑powered personalization engine behind ads on Facebook and Instagram, which means placements will be tailored to user activity.

Threads first tested ads in select markets last year and opened to advertisers in spring 2025. With this expansion, the app is now part of Meta’s core advertising ecosystem. For users, it means sponsored posts will soon mix in with regular content.
The timing comes as competition heats up in social and AI platforms. OpenAI recently announced ads for ChatGPT’s free and “ChatGPT Go” tiers, while Google said Gemini will remain ad‑free.

Meta’s move highlights its intent to monetize Threads as its user base grows, with recent reports showing it has overtaken X (formerly Twitter) in daily active users on iOS and Android.
