Apple has launched Digital ID, a new feature in Apple Wallet. Currently available in the US, it lets people create an ID using their US passport. For now, it works in beta at more than 250 TSA checkpoints, giving travelers another way to verify their identity when flying domestically.
Digital ID builds on Apple’s earlier support for driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet. Unlike a physical passport, though, it cannot be used for international travel or border crossings.
Setting it up is straightforward. Users scan the passport’s photo page and chip with their iPhone, then take a selfie and follow simple prompts to confirm identity. Once verified, the Digital ID is stored securely on the device. Apple says the information is encrypted and private, with Face ID or Touch ID used for authentication.
To show the ID, users double-click the side or Home button, choose Digital ID in Wallet, and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a reader. Only the requested details are shared, and each use requires confirmation.

Apple plans to expand Digital ID beyond airports. Future uses could include businesses, apps, and online services for identity and age checks. There’s no information yet on a wider global rollout. Stay tuned for updates.
