Android tests new Notification Rules for more control over alerts

Google is testing a new Notification Rules in Android 17 Beta 3. The update was spotted in code strings and could give users more control over how alerts from apps and contacts behave.

Under Notification Rules, users can assign one of five actions to incoming alerts: Silence, Block, Silence & Bundle, Highlight, or Highlight & Alert. This means you can mute or block specific contacts without silencing all calls, or highlight important messages so they stand out with sound or vibration.

The feature applies to both apps and contacts. Users can search, select, or deselect multiple items when creating rules. Highlighting will prioritize alerts visually, while bundling keeps silenced notifications organized without cluttering the main feed.

The update isn’t limited to Pixel devices. Samsung is also preparing support for One UI 9, which points to wider adoption across Android phones.

Google has not confirmed a release date. But the feature will strengthen Android’s lead over iOS in notification management. Current Android tools already include Notification Channels, Cooldown, Modes, and Organizer.

For now, the feature is still being tested. If it rolls out, it could change how users manage notifications with more tailored control over them.
