The Philippine National Police (PNP) is joining forces with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to crack down on fake QR codes used in online selling platforms.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) will track and identify individuals behind these scams. Criminals use QR codes to redirect victims to fake websites, a scheme known as “quishing.” These sites steal personal data, banking credentials, and payments by tricking users into scanning fraudulent codes.
Authorities warn that not all QR codes posted online are legitimate. PNP-ACG chief Maj. Gen. Wilson Asueta reminded the public to only trust QR codes from authorized sources. Remember that vigilance is key because scammers continue to adapt to new technology trends.
The PNP is also urging the public to report suspicious QR codes immediately. Verifying QR codes before scanning or making payments will help prevent fraud and protect personal information.
