MediaTek Helio P90 features AI upgrade, updated ISP

MediaTek recently announced the new Helio P90, its latest flagship SoC that comes with next-gen AI technology.

MediaTek Helio P90 is here

When MediaTek entered the market, it ushered in an era of low cost, high performing processors. Their chips are often found in entry-level and mid-range phones, promising just enough power at a lower price point.

The Helio series was introduced for more upscale devices, primarily competing in the upper mid-range space. Recently, the company has announced the Helio P90, a new midrange chip that features a new and upgraded AI engine.

The Helio P90 comes with the new APU 2.0, a new AI architecture designed to deliver improved AI experiences that the company claims to be 4X more powerful than previous chipsets.

The new chip has eight cores composed of two ARM A75 processors for heavy tasks and six A55 processors for lighter processes. It also comes with a PowerVR GM 9446 GPU, and a new CorePilot technology for more efficient processing.

“The Helio P90 is an AI processing powerhouse with ultra-fast performance and a host of AI-powered imaging improvements. This chip will reset consumer expectations of what a smartphone can do, and usher in a new era of super high-resolution smartphone photography to the market,” said TL Lee, MediaTek Wireless Communication Business Unit General Manager.

Apart from the new AI technology, the Helio P90 comes with improved camera capabilities thanks to its upgraded triple image signal processors (ISP). This allows support for cameras of up to 48MP or a combination of 24MP + 16MP for dual cameras. It can also capture 48MP videos up to 30fps with zero shutter delay and super slow-motion videos at 480fps.

The IPS also comes with a new AI engine designed to provide better AI camera experiences which can accurately detect faces and scenes in real-time, even under low light conditions.

The Helio P90 also supports dual SIM dual VoLTE 4G LTE WorldMode with a fast Cat-12 (DL) / Cat-13 (UL) 4G LTE modem, 4×4 MIMO, 256QAM, 2×2 802.11ac, and Bluetooth 5.0.

We can expect devices powered by the Helio P90 starting Q1 of 2019.
