vivo Y31 unboxed: Initial review, camera samples

vivo will launch the vivo Y31 in the Philippines on February 5, 2021. This is the first phone the company will launch in the country in 2021. And it looks like they’re off to a great start.

At this point, we’re still under embargo, meaning we’re limited to what we can say about the smartphone. Still, there’s plenty to share (and like), so for now, check out our vivo Y31 first impressions and initial review below.

First Impressions & Initial Review

The vivo Y31 comes in a typical vivo-branded box. Inside, we have the smartphone unit bundled with a silicone case, a charger, a USB-C cable, earphones, and the usual documentation.

The smartphone itself is huge and follows the aesthetics of other vivo smartphone. Suffice to say, it looks beautiful punctuated by a clean layout. The back panel has a matte finish on top of a gradient design with curved sides and corners.

The volume rocker is located on the right side, together with the side fingerprint-scanner / power key. At the top, we have the SIM tray and a secondary microphone. The bottom has the 3.5mm headphone jack, the main microphone, a USB-C port, and the speaker.

From the front, you have the large 6.58-inch display with a dew drop notch for the selfie camera and the earpiece tucked above it, barely noticed in the bezel. You’ll also notice that the thick chin is also present.

Our review unit sports the Ocean Blue colorway. As the Indian vivo website describes it, the color is a cascading blend of light blue and green [which] brings back the pure joy of a carefree beach holiday. To put it bluntly, its pleasing to the eye.

One of the main features of the vivo Y31 is the 48MP AI camera at the back on a slightly raised rectangular camera module. Initial impressions of the photo quality shows a lot of promise, given the midrange nature of the phone (we’re guessing its going to be price under or close to Php 12K).

Check out our camera samples below:

As for its internals, the vivo Y31 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6-series processor with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.

It has a large 5,000mAh battery onboard, ensuring at least a full day or two of usage. Charging won’t be an issue as the phone supports 18-watt fast charging via USB-C. It should be able to charge up to 70% power in just 60 minutes.

Wrap Up

I think that pretty much sums up what to expect from the vivo Y31. So far, the phone has a lot of promise.

As our initial impressions show, you get a beautiful design, together with a 48MP AI camera, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6-series processor, a large display, and a 5,000mAh battery with 18-watts fast charging.

Good so far. We’ll share more information as soon as the embargo lifts. Stay tuned for our full review coming soon.
