MediaTek unveils Dimensity 8400 for premium phones

MediaTek has just dropped its latest chipset, the Dimensity 8400, aimed at giving premium smartphones a serious performance boost. This new chip features an “All Big Core” design, which was first seen in the flagship Dimensity 9400. This means it’s built for speed and efficiency, especially when it comes to AI and gaming tasks.

The Dimensity 8400 boasts an eight-core Arm Cortex-A725 processor that can clock up to 3.25GHz. According to MediaTek, this translates to a 41% increase in multi-core performance compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 8300. But it’s not just about raw power — the 8400 is also designed to consume power efficiently, using 44% less peak power than the 8300.

The Dimensity 8400 also features an Arm Mali-G720 GPU, which delivers a 24% boost in peak performance and is 42% more power-efficient than the previous generation. This GPU works alongside MediaTek’s Frame Rate Converter and Adaptive Gaming Technology 3.0 to ensure games run smoothly without draining the battery.

Moreover, it comes with MediaTek’s NPU 880 for handling AI tasks and the Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE), allowing for smarter AI applications. The company claims that the NPU 880 can support mainstream LLMs (Large Language Models) globally, opening the door for AI-powered features like translation, content generation, and more.

Other notable features include a 5G-A modem, network optimization technology, support for high-resolution displays, and an advanced image signal processor (ISP) for improved photography and video recording.

MediaTek says that we can expect to see the first smartphones powered by the Dimensity 8400 hit the shelves by the end of 2024.
