TikTok ban delayed for another 75 days

TikTok has received a reprieve for another month and a half. President Trump has signed an executive order that delays the ban for another 75 days.

Trump attempted to ban the platform in 2020. However, he changed his mind in 2024 after using it himself.

Moreover, he mentioned the possibility of a joint partnership between the United States and its Chinese owner, ByteDance, to run TikTok, much to China’s disappointment.

Trump also said might impose new trade tariffs on China if a deal does not push through, considering such rejection a “somewhat hostile act.”

YouTuber MrBeast and Elon Musk were among the names that appeared to be interested in buying TikTok.

On Monday, TikTok went dark in the US, hours before the new law banning the app took effect. It went back online after 12 hours, crediting its return to President Trump.

Yesterday, CapCut went back online in the US. However, the app still doesn’t appear in Apple or Google’s app stores.

While the reprieve is welcome news for US users, the long-term fate of TikTok remains uncertain. The law that led to the ban required ByteDance to sell the US version of TikTok to an American company or face a permanent ban. The deadline was set for January 19.
