The Land Transportation Office (LTO) will start impounding e-bikes and e-trikes found on major roads beginning December 1. The agency says the move is meant to keep busy routes safe and organized.
LTO chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao confirmed the plan during Senate budget talks for the Department of Transportation (DOTr). He explained that violators will face automatic impoundment once caught on restricted roads.
Many of these vehicles are not registered with the LTO. Moreover, their drivers often don’t have licenses or insurance, which further raises safety concerns.
Before enforcement begins, the DOTr plans to roll out an information campaign to alert riders and the public. The drive will give operators time to adjust before stricter measures take effect.
