Spotify debuts AI-powered Prompted Playlists

Spotify’s Prompted Playlists are now available to Premium subscribers in the United States and Canada. The new tool lets users create playlists by simply typing what they want to hear, making music discovery easier, more natural, and personal.

Prompted Playlists are still in beta. The feature builds on Spotify’s earlier AI playlist experiments but takes a more conversational approach. Instead of sticking to genres or moods, users can describe playlists in plain language. For example, you can ask for songs that introduce you to a new artist or tracks that fit a rainy afternoon.

Spotify’s AI looks at music trends, charts, culture, and your listening history to generate playlists. If you want fresh recommendations, you can choose to exclude your history. Prompts don’t need to be technical. They can be inspired by feelings, activities, or even TV shows.

Each playlist is unique, even if multiple users enter the same prompt. Spotify also allows prompts to be shared, opening the door for creators who specialize in crafting playlist ideas.

The company says Prompted Playlists will coexist with its earlier AI playlist tool, though this may cause some overlap. For now, the feature is limited to English and has usage restrictions while Spotify gathers feedback. A wider rollout will depend on results from these initial markets.

What do you think of Spotify’s AI-powered Prompted Playlists? Is this something you’d use? Stay tuned.
