Meta will shut down Messenger.com in April 2026. Announced on this help page, the standalone website for Messenger will no longer be available, and users will be redirected to facebook.com/messages.
If you have a Facebook account, you can continue your chats on Facebook’s site or through the Messenger mobile app. For those without Facebook accounts, the only option left will be the mobile app. Your chat history can be restored using a PIN from Messenger backups, which can also be reset if needed.
This change comes after Meta ended support for Messenger’s desktop apps on Windows and Mac. The company has been consolidating its messaging services, focusing on Facebook’s main site and the mobile app.
Messenger started as Facebook Chat in 2008, became a standalone app in 2011, and was separated from the Facebook app in 2014. In 2023, Meta began merging Messenger back into Facebook, showing its plan to keep everything under one platform.

The shutdown is part of Meta’s effort to streamline services and cut costs. Some users may be unhappy about losing Messenger.com, while others don’t even know it exists.
What do you think of the Messenger.com shutdown? Do you use it or do you rely solely on the app? Stay tuned,
